Ferdinand Waititu named Farmers Party leader
He is set to take over from KICC board chair Irungu Nyakera.
Former Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu has been named as the new party leader for Farmers Party by Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu.
Waititu, who has appealed against the 12-year jail term imposed against him for corruption last week, takes over from Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) board chair Irungu Nyakera.
In a gazette notice, Nderitu also indicated that John Wambugu will serve as the deputy party leader in charge of policy and strategy while Nicholas Ikui will serve as the deputy party leader in charge of resource mobilisation.
Thomas Omboga shall serve as the deputy chairperson as Stephen Maina takes up the responsibility as deputy chairperson in charge of programmes and political affairs.
Nderitu invited persons opposed to the new changes to submit their objections within seven days.
“Any person with written submissions concerning the intended changes by the political party shall be within seven (7) days from the date of this publication make their written submissions to the Registrar of Political Parties,”Nderitu said in the statement.
Apart from the leadership changes, the party shall also be relocating its headquarters from Sifa Towers along Lenana Road to Delta House along University Way.
Farmers Party was founded by David Nduati who passed away in 2022 and was succeeded by Irungu Nyakera who is a former gubernatorial candidate for Murang’a County.
The changes at the Party raises questions as Waititu, now the new party leader was impeached by the Kiambu County governor over abuse of office and involvement in graft.
In 2019, 63 Members of the County Assembly voted in favour of his removal.
At the time, Ndenderu MCA Solomon Kinuthia tabled the motion.
As far as the law is concerned, political parties are not considered state offices, making Waititu’s party leader status valid.
However, his candidacy for elective positions is still restricted.
