Kenya Veterans for Peace (KVP) CEO Nelson Mukara Sechere charged with Sh20million fraud

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kenya Veterans for Peace (KVP), a Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) military veterans’ organization Nelson Mukara Sechere was today charged at a Milimani court in Nairobi in connection to over Sh20million cooking oil and rice fraud.

Nelson Mukara Sechere, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kenya Veterans for Peace (KVP), a Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) military veterans’ organization in the dock at Milimani Law Courts. He was charged with Sh20million fraud, October 25, 2024.

Sechere, who is facing several cases of fraud in court was charged with obtaining goods by falsely pretense against the law.

The court heard that on December 6,2023 and December 11,2023 at Nairobi county, Sechere, jointly with others not before court, obtained goods with intent to defraud from Caroline Mwoni Amusala.

On the said dates, Sechere is said to have obtained 600 sacks of 25kgs of rice and 500 Jerrycans of 20litres each of cooking oil all valued at Sh4,026,700 by falsely pretending that it was a genuine agreement between the vendor and Kenya Veterans for Peace for the supply and delivery of the said goods.

In yet another file, the court heard that on diverse between July 1,2024 and September 20,2024 at the KVP offices located at sixteenth floor at Nyayo House in Nairobi, with intent to defraud, Sechere obtained additional 12,040 Kgs of Sugar, 15,020Kgs of rice and 5720Kgs of cooking oil all valued at Sh16,989,500 from Kipkoech Mutai by falsely pretending that he was in a position to pay for the goods upon delivery knowing that it was untrue.

Through his lawyer Jack Bigambo, the accused pleaded with the court to be released on favorable terms

Bigambo informed the court that his client is a director of the said organization which is well known.

“These charges are for a civil suit and should not be before this court. They are an abuse of prosecutorial powers.”  Bigambo submitted before court.

According to Bigambo, the accused is one of the directors of KVP and he has cooperated with the team of investigators.

The prosecution did not oppose his release on bail but requested the court to consider the amount involved and the nature of the offense while granting bail.

In one of the files that will be consolidated with another in different court, Sechere was released on Sh5million bond or an alternative cash bail of Sh2million.

In another file that bears similar charges but different amount and victims, Sechere was released on Sh2million bond or a cash bail of Sh1million.

The court directed that the pre-trial and consolidation of the cases will be on October 29, 2024.

On July 6, 2022, Sechere appears to have gained notoriety in fraudulent schemes was also charged after he was accused of defrauding six job seekers of Sh2.4million in fake police recruitment deals under the guise that he would help them gain admission to the Kiganjo Police College Training College at a fee of Sh400,000 each.

He was released on Sh50,000 cash bail.
