Court orders detention of SGR vandalism suspects

A Mombasa court has allowed police to detain two more suspects arrested in connection to the vandalisation and destruction of a section of the standard gauge railway (SGR) at Mariakani for 14 days.

This comes barely a day after three others were ordered to be remanded  over similar allegations.

Mombasa resident magistrate Emmanuel Mutunga certified the the application by Directir of Public Prosecution as urgent saying the crimes  the  two suspects namely, DavidMusyoki and

Nicholas Muthuku are alleged to have committed was economic sabotage and a possible treason intended to injure president Uhuru Kenyatta.

“The offences you are suspected of having committed are very serious and I hereby issue orders for the duo to be remanded at Central police station to facilitate for 
investigations on the heavily funded SGR,” said Mutunga.

This was after the state through principal prosecuting counsel Yamina Jamii successfully made the application to have the suspects detained after they were arrested by flying squad officers in Jomvu.

Yamina informed the court that the said section of SGR was vandalized and destroyed and that the timing of the incident coming before the official launch of the train by thePresident raised a lot of eyebrows that needed to be investigated to establish the suspects motive.

Yamina further informed the court that the activity of the respondents in pursuing selfish advantage is in direct conflict with the interest of the community.

Mutunga ordered the suspects to be  produced  in court on June 14 this year.
