The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has suspended Nakuru-Kisumu passenger tain services after its Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) was damaged by the ongoing heavy downpour.
A section of the Kisumu-Nairobi railway line at Kobigori area in Muhoroni sub-county, Kisumu county, has been damaged as a result of ongoing heavy rains putting the weekly passenger and train services to the lakeside city in jeopardy.
In a public notice today, KRC said that the suspension has been effected due to the heavy rains being experienced countrywide.
“We have therefore suspended the Kisumu Safari train services on Friday, May 5, 2023 and Sunday, May 7, 2023.” The notice reads in part.
The rail service provider however assured its customers that efforts to restore to track are underway and communication shall be made once clearance is granted.
“We sincerely apologize for any inconveniences caused.” The notice added.
Preliminary assessment of the damaged section shows that the base of one of the pillars of the railway bridge at Kibigori was swept away by ravaging flood waters.
The soil beneath the bridge that is supporting the railway-line has also caved in thus exposing the users to grave danger.
