Trump hits Kenya with 10% trade tariff as he targets 180 countries
Trade and Investment Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui has said that Kenya will meet policy makers from the US for talks next week to chart the way forward
Kenya is among countries hit by a new baseline 10 per cent tariff on all imports to the United States announced by President Donald Trump on Wednesday as part of his promised “Liberation Day” shift in policy.
Analysts say the new trade strategy targeting a total of 180 countries, which Trump has referred to as “kind,” is designed to counteract foreign tariffs, trade barriers, and currency manipulation that his administration claims have placed US businesses at a disadvantage.
The reciprocal tariff is higher for countries that already had a high tariff on US goods.
However, most African countries such as South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya have long enjoyed preferential treatment under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), meaning the new regime marks a major shift in US trade policy.
It also puts in doubt the possibility that the AGOA treaty may not be renewed in its current form when it expires in September.
However, while some countries may seek to retaliate, Trade and Investment Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui has said that Kenya will meet policy makers from the US for talks next week to chart the way forward.
