Sports CS Ababu Namwamba booed amid “Ruto must go” chants during late Fred Omondi’s memorial service
Drama played out yesterday night at Canivore Grounds as Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba faced unmatched hostility from unrelenting youthful crowd chanting “Ruto must go” as tried to address Kenyans who had gathered to honour comedian and singer Fred Omondi who died following a road accident.
At some point, Ababu was shouted down and forced to cut short his address forcing Churchill to intervene to calm the charged crowd.
Fred was brother to comedian and activist-cum-politician Eric Omondi.
During the event dubbed “Fred Omondi, The last Laugh” Ababu who was on stage with other officials to pay his tributes was met by a hostile crowd that started booing him as he handed over to the officers who had accompanied him to say a word.
Ababu in response to the booing and “Ruto must go” chants said he respects the energy from the crowd.
“We recognize that energy, we appreciate it but we shall pay respects to Fredrick (Fred) Omondi tonight. We live in an amazing country where everybody has a right to say their bit. Thank you very much (Asanteni sana). Keep booing, keep cheering, keep saying no as others say yes,” Ababu said.
He then gave his contribution of Sh300,000 to the family as support towards Fred’s burial arrangements.
As the booing continued, Ababu said, “Na leo make sure you get enough content. The booing is great content… I have enjoyed this.”
The show, dedicated to raising funds and celebrating the life of Fred Omondi was held at the Carnivore Simba saloon.
After the event, the CS took to social media to say that he was pleased to face Kenyans opposed to the Finance Bill, 2024.
He said once emotions settle, they will understand everyone has a role to play in building our nation for the better.
