Ruto commissions Sh3.8 billion Ngong Road Flyover to ease Nairobi traffic gridlock

President William Ruto has today commissioned the Sh3.8 billion Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover, describing it as a transformative investment that will ease chronic traffic congestion and enhance the efficiency of Nairobi’s transport network.

The project, implemented by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) headed by Director General Engineer Silas Kinoti, comprises an 800-metre dual carriageway, including a 400-metre elevated overpass and a 400-metre expanded road section designed to improve traffic flow at one of the city’s busiest intersections.

The flyover separates through-traffic along Ngong Road from vehicles accessing Naivasha Road and King’ara Road, significantly reducing congestion and travel time for motorists heading to and from the Central Business District.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, President Ruto said the project is a strategic investment aimed at improving productivity and supporting Nairobi’s growing economy.

“This Sh3.8 billion Ngong Road-Naivasha Road Flyover is a strategic investment in the efficiency, productivity and competitiveness of our capital city,” the president said.

He noted that traffic congestion has for years imposed significant economic costs on businesses and commuters alike.

“For too long, congestion has imposed a heavy cost on our economy, and on the daily lives of our people. Every hour lost in traffic is an hour of productivity forfeited, income delayed, and opportunity diminished,” he said.

Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in modern infrastructure to position Nairobi as a globally competitive city capable of supporting a rapidly expanding economy.

“We will continue building infrastructure that attracts investments and prepares Nairobi for the demands of a rapidly growing economy. We are determined to build a capital city that is efficient, connected and globally competitive,” he said.

The flyover was financed through a loan from the Spain Corporate International Fund (FIEM).

According to KURA, the grade-separated interchange is expected to eliminate traffic bottlenecks at the busy Junction Mall intersection, reduce travel time for motorists, public transport users and pedestrians, and improve overall road safety.

The project also incorporates Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) facilities, including dedicated pedestrian walkways and cycling paths to promote safer mobility for non-motorised road users.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the project consists of a 400-metre elevated overpass and an additional 400-metre upgraded road section, forming an 800-metre transport corridor that will greatly improve traffic movement along Ngong Road.

President Ruto also highlighted several major infrastructure projects currently underway in Nairobi, including the Upper Hill–Kenyatta Avenue viaduct, which he said is 60 per cent complete.

He further announced the upgrading of State House Road through a Sh1.6 billion investment aimed at modernising one of the city’s strategic transport corridors.

The President also said the government is implementing Nairobi’s Intelligent Transport System, describing it as one of the continent’s most significant smart mobility investments.

He revealed that the first phase of the project, comprising 25 signalised junctions and a modern traffic management centre valued at approximately Sh7 billion, is already under construction.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja welcomed the completion of the flyover, attributing the milestone to the close collaboration between the county government and the national government.

The new overpass is also expected to improve access to key public facilities, including the Talanta Stadium, which is under construction ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), further enhancing mobility within the city’s southern transport corridor.
