Police officer killed, eight remandees escape after bandit attack in Samburu
The officers were attacked while escorting prisoners in was ambushed by suspected Turkana bandits.
Eight remandees escaped and one police officer was shot dead after a vehicle they were escorting prisoners in was ambushed by suspected Turkana bandits.
The attack occurred in Charda, Samburu County along the Maralal-Baragoi-South Horr road.
The prisoners were being taken to Baragoi for a mobile court session from Maralal GK prison.
Marti Police Station Commander Robert Amuke confirmed the attack which happened at dawn yesterday.
“On Monday at around 1900 hours, I received information that officers from Baragoi Police Station, who were escorting remandees, had been attacked by suspected Turkana bandits,” Amuke confirmed.
Humphrey Oroba, who was the driver of the vehicle, was found dead at the scene with multiple gunshots.
His AK-47 riffle which was loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition was also missing.
Two escort officers, Nicholas Yegon and Kitasho Oloimaatha, who were abducted were later found unharmed with their firearms and ammunition intact.
Police reports indicate that a joint team of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the General Service Unit (GSU) together with regular police officers have launched a search operation.
The eight prison escapees who are facing serious charges such as defilement, gang defilement, firearm possession, murder, and robbery with violence, remain at large.
Among the notable escapees is Lokwawi Adoro, who is accused of murder and robbery with violence, and Namulem Losam, who is facing firearm possession charges.
The body of the slain police officer has been moved to the Baragoi Sub-County Hospital Mortuary awaiting an autopsy.
