Orengo decries ‘unprocedural’ withdrawal of his security team

Fiery politician and Siaya Governor James Orengo who is also a self-declared Linda Wananchi Party leader, an ODM splinter faction has protested the abrupt withdrawal of his official security personnel, terming the move irregular, unexplained and a matter of serious concern.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Siaya governor said his entire personal security detail, including officers assigned to his Nairobi residence, was withdrawn on the evening of Tuesday, May 19, 2026, without prior notice, formal communication or replacement.

In a separate formal letter addressed to Douglas Kanja, Orengo described the move as “abrupt and unprocedural” and demanded the immediate reinstatement or replacement of the officers.

The governor argued that the provision of security to state officers is a constitutional and statutory entitlement aimed at enabling public officials to discharge their duties without fear, compromise or harm.

“As a state officer, the provision of security is not a favour, a luxury, or a political privilege. It is a constitutional right and a statutory entitlement anchored in the laws of Kenya,” Orengo stated.

He further sought an explanation from the Ministry of Interior and the Inspector General of Police regarding the circumstances under which the withdrawal was authorised.

The outspoken governor, who has recently emerged as a vocal critic of the current administration, suggested that the move could be intended to intimidate or silence dissenting voices.

“I am writing to register my strong protest regarding the abrupt and unprocedural withdrawal of my personal security detail and the security personnel deployed at my Nairobi residence,” Orengo said in the letter.

He maintained that the withdrawal was highly irregular and deeply concerning, noting that the officers were removed without official communication or suitable replacements being provided.

Orengo copied the letter to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, the Council of Governors chairperson and the Siaya County Police Commander.

Governors and other senior state officers are ordinarily assigned police officers as part of official state protection arrangements coordinated by the National Police Service.

Despite the development, Orengo said he would continue carrying out his duties with patriotism and commitment.

“However, we continue to do our work with enthusiasm and patriotism,” he said.
