IG Kanja responds to Robert Alai accusations of sponsoring goons attack
Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja has dismissed as false, malicious and unfounded, claims that he was behind an attack by goons on Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) staff at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The IG also dismissed accusations by Kileleshwa MCA and blogger Robert Alai that he also funded the recent Kisumu political rally by Linda Mwananchi followers.
Kanja now wants the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to immediately summon Alai to record a statement regarding these allegations.
The MCA made the allegations in social media platforms in which he accused the police boss of allowing goons to assault KAA staff at the airport recently.
“The attention of Kanja, the serving Inspector General of National Police Service has been drawn to reckless and unfounded allegations circulated by Alai, MCA Kileleshwa Ward, on social media.
He claimed that the IG funded the recent Linda Mwananchi rally in Kisumu, and also allowed goons to assault airport workers, allegations which are false, unfounded and unfortunate,” reads a statement issued by Albert Nyakundi, his private communication strategist.
The statement adds that there is no verified Incident at JKIA, neither is there an official report, OB entry, or verified account confirming that “goons” assaulted KAA staff at the airport.
Alai had written on his Facebook page: “The current IG of Police will destroy the country. He recently funded, supported and even helped the Linda Mwananchi rally in Kisumu,
“Today, the same IG is seeing goons assault Kenya Airports Authority staff at JKIA. No noise from the tribal media and even no compliant from Irungu Houghton and his bunch of tribal activists,
“What are we doing to this country? How is the assault of JKIA staff by goons allowed?”
But in his response, the IG pointed out that the National Police Service operates under strict professional standards and any security incident at a national facility is documented and investigated accordingly.
Kanja further states that there is no evidence of misconduct on his part and that Mr Alai “has provided no proof to support the claim that the IG funded, supported, or facilitated any political rally in Kisumu.”
He adds: “Such claims are false, malicious, and intended to mislead the public and undermine the integrity of the Office of the Inspector General,
“The IG is a career police officer with over three decades of service. He is mandated by the Constitution to provide impartial and professional leadership of the National Police Service in safeguarding the security of over 50 million Kenyans,” Kanja maintained.
He termed as regrettable and dangerous, any attempts to drag the him or his office into partisan politics without factual basis.
“The Inspector General of police remains committed to serving all Kenyans regardless of their political ideologies and impartially upholding the rule of law and maintaining public order,” he said and added:
“Subsequently, the IG has called upon the DCI to immediately summon Alai to record a statement regarding these allegations.”
