New Nairobi security unit to be unveiled in May, Interior CS Murkomen says
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen yesterday announced that the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit will be fully operational by May 1, 2026 in a move aimed at strengthening security in the capital.
Murkomen made the announcement after meeting a technical committee tasked with overseeing the formation and rollout of the new policing unit.
The meeting was also attended by Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) Douglas Kanja, Internal Security Principal Administrative Secretary Jacob Narengo, Internal Security Secretary for Administration Thomas Saka, and National Police Service Director of Reforms John Kamau, alongside other senior officials.
He said the government remains committed to delivering the project within the set timeline, in line with directives from President William Ruto and an agreement between the National Government and Nairobi City County.
“In line with President William Ruto’s directive and the cooperation agreement between the National Government and Nairobi City County, we are committed to establishing the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit by May 1,” Murkomen said.
The unit is expected to enhance policing in Nairobi, a densely populated city facing rising security demands linked to urban growth, economic activity and increased movement of people. Authorities say it will improve coordination, response times and overall safety for residents, visitors and investors.
The technical committee briefed the Cabinet Secretary on the proposed structure of the unit, including its command framework, staffing plan and rollout strategy. Officials also reviewed key milestones already achieved and outlined remaining steps ahead of the launch date.
Murkomen said the initiative represents a broader reform within the security sector aimed at making policing more efficient and accountable.
“The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit marks a significant step toward a more responsive, efficient, and accountable policing system, one ultimately aimed at enhancing safety and security for all residents,” he said.
