Nairobi doctors threaten strike as county fails to honor agreement
Medics in Nairobi have issued fresh strike warning accusing the Nairobi City County government of failing to implement their return-to-work formula signed two months ago.
In an exclusive sharing with The Informer Media Group, Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) Nairobi chapter Secretary General Malindi Chao revealed that while the county has tried paying them on time except for last month where they are still waiting for the salary, they have not implemented any of the other details signed in the return to work formula.
She stated that beginning Thursday, if the Sakaja led administration will not have paid their November Salary and implemented the return to work formula, they will be forced to commence their strike.
“We are midway December, but we are yet to receive our November salaries. The county has not implemented anything on the return to work formula that we signed two months ago. This is why we are giving notice that beginning Thursday, December 18, 2025 we shall begin our strike,” she stated.
According to the SG, they accepted to return to work in October with faith that the city county would take care of their pleas and save the situation of patients who were suffering.
“We could not be on strike forever that is why we accepted to sign the return to work formula with hope that they would fulfill their promises. But just like our Kiambu counterparts, it is back to factory setting and nothing has been done so far,” she added.
This will be the third strike by the doctors in a single year as they continue to fight for promotions, permanent contracts and payments of their third-party deductions.
The union officials have continuously pointed out that the delays contravene the Employment Act of 2007, which requires that wages be paid promptly and not later than the fifth day after the end of the pay period.
