The Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi has promised to campaign for the Building Bridges Initiative signatures collection process.
ANC leader said that Party leader Musalia Mudavadi said ANC will separately spearhead signature collection across the country and seek to have its own platform to popularise the document alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
“ANC party now supports the BBI process and urges all Kenyans to come together and participate in this process with a view to having a smooth and basically a non-contested referendum,” he said.
According to Mudavadi the BBI bill, which was released on Wednesday, is an improved version from earlier proposals since it has interest of Kenyans.
He announced that ANC will be forming its own platform of popularizing the document because they want to have a discussion with the people without unnecessary political noise.
“After undertaking a detailed study and analysis of the bill, we concluded that the document was a significant improvement from the one that was launched at the Bomas of Kenya. We will have no problem recommending it to Kenyans,” he said.
Mudavadi has urged all Kenyans to come together and participate in the process with a view of having a smooth, non-contested referendum.
He was particularly pleased that the clause which would have given PARLIAMENT political parties power in the appointment of commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was erroded.
“This proposal has been shelved altogether, meaning that appointment of IEBC shall remain as currently provided under the present Constitution. This enhances IEBC’s independence,” he said.
Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, ANC party member said he supported the bill promising to rally his constituency in appending their signatures.
“As ANC, we will take part in encouraging people to append signatures. We promise to deliver up to half of the signatures that will be collected,” he said.
Apart from Malala, he was accompanied by Lugari MP Ayub Savula, Nambale MP Sakwa Bunyasi and Vihiga Woman Rep Beatrice Adagala.
