Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan has called for justice to be served to the family of 17-year-old Ibrahim Ramadhan Chege, who succumbed to head injuries after he was shot yesterday by undercover police officers.
The lawmaker termed the killing of the teen, who is abled differently, as senseless as he condemned the shooting by the police.
“The senseless killing of Ibrahim Ramadhan, a 16-year-old youth with disabilities, is a tragedy that deeply saddens and angers me. I strongly condemn the murder of Ibrahim, who was shot in the head by a police officer in Majengo yesterday evening and died shortly after being taken to the hospital. His life, full of potential, was cruelly cut short,” Yusuf lamented.
According to the MP, it is a troubling pattern where police use violence on Citizens and kill them, and he called for urgent actions from the national government.
He urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to expedite a swift and thorough investigation into the matter.
“This is not an isolated incident. Ibrahim’s death highlights the urgent need for accountability and justice within the national police service. I demand a swift and thorough investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) into this horrific act. The officer responsible must be apprehended and held accountable for his actions,” he explained.
The form three student at Kamukunji Secondary was yesterday shot in Majengo by police who alledged that he resisted arrest before raising an alarm attracting fellow Muslim youths who caused violence.
However, human rights activists have denied the allegations as they said the young man was headed to the mosque for prayers when he was conered by the police.
The incident that happened yesterday has caused protests in the areas since yesterday evening up to a better part of today, leading to the youths burning police houses and their vehicle in Majengo.
Anti-riot police officers were dispatched in the area as they lobbed tear gas at the protesting youths, even as tension in the area remains high.
The relentless youths have not faltered and continue to cause chaos in the Majengo area, with several neighbouring communities also affected by the riots.
