Malala accuses police of assaulting his driver
He claimed that the officers attempted to destroy pictorial evidence on the driver’s phone following the incident
Police officers in Kakamega have been accused of assaulting and injuring the driver of former Senator Cleophas Malala.
In a statement, Malala, who is the interim deputy party leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), claimed that an OCS named Rotich and three other officers trailed his vehicle and forced the driver to stop.
Malala added that after the officers discovered he was not in the vehicle, the officers allegedly commanded the driver to drive to an unknown destination, but he refused and was then assaulted using a gun pointer.
“The Kakamega OCS, a one Rotich and three other uniformed officers, trailed my vehicle and forced my driver to stop. Disappointingly, upon confirming I was not on board, they commanded him to drive to an unknown destination. When he refused, they assaulted him so severely using a gun pointer that he was left profusely bleeding,” Malala claimed.
The former UDA Secretary General also claimed that his driver was detained at Kakamega Central Police Station for hours before he was escorted to Kakamega General Hospital for treatment.
Malala also claimed that the officers attempted to destroy pictorial evidence on the driver’s phone following the incident.
“Instead of permitting medical aid, they detained him at Kakamega Central Police Station for hours. Only after this unlawful detention was he escorted by armed officers to Kakamega General Hospital for treatment. Shockingly, they attempted to destroy pictorial evidence on his phone, a crude attempt to conceal their actions, to no avail of success,” he stated.
Further, he added that they will file a complaint against the police officers at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
“Our nation sinks deeper into lawlessness when officers become perpetrators. We will not be intimidated; we are formally filing a complaint with IPOA,” he added.
