Juja MP George Koimburi spent night with Murang’a woman MCA on night of alleged abduction

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of Grace Nduta Wairimu, a member of the Murang’a County Assembly, in connection with the stage-managed abduction of Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi.

In a statement released following reports that the Kenyanya-in ward MCA had been abducted, the DCI said she was arrested yesterday as part of ongoing investigations into the incident.

“It has been confirmed that, despite claims of being in Kangema and attending church services and political rallies on May 25, 2025, evidence clearly shows that she was at Eliis Bar and Restaurant in Kiganjo, Gatundu South with Hon George Koimburi the entire night,” DCI spokesman John Marete said.

On Wednesday, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja revealed that detectives had established that the Subaru Forester involved in the alleged abduction of Koimbura belongs to Cyrus Muhia, a friend to NG-CDF chairman Peter Kiratu.

In a statement, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja also said that the Honda CRV that picked Koimbura and took him to a hotel where he had refreshments and spend the night with his alleged abductors on May 26 belongs to Muhia.

Detectives have also identified the room where the MP spend the night and arrested them alongside one of the MP’s aides, Karanja Gatana, in connection with the incident.

According to Kanja, Muhia’s Honda CRV Re. No. KBP 096W picked Koimbura on May 26 and took him to the scene where they claimed he had been dumped, adding that before the MP left the vehicle, he helped him to tear his clothes to fake evidence of torture by his alleged abductors.

The police boss said the three have provided crucial leads and insights into the alleged abduction.

He stated that Kiratu told detectives that on May 25, he attended a church service at Full Gospel Church, Mugutha, with the MP and as they were leaving, a silver Subaru Forester Reg. No. KDG 803B approached the main entrance and two heavily built men bundled the MP into the vehicle. He reported the incident at Mugutha Police Station.

“Additionally, on May 26, 2025, he received a call from the MP’s vehicle, Wanjiru, informing him that the MP had been found in a coffee farm in Juja. They then took the MP to Plainsview Hospital, Ruiru, for first aid before they were referred to Karen Hospital for further treatment,” Kanja said.

On the other hand, Muhia, who runs a supermarket in Kahawa West stated that on May 24, he received a call from Kiratu requesting the use of his Subaru Forester to transport additional security personel for the MP during an event at Full Gospel Church, Muguta, and he agreed.

Kanja added that Muhia further told detectives that on May 25, Kiratu instructed him to go to his homestead in Mugutha where he met Gatana, who was driving the Honda CRV, with three unknown men before they proceeded to the church to familiarise themselves with the route before returning.

“Later, Kiratu called him and instructed him to drive two men towards the church. Upon arrival, the two men exited quickly and he heard screams as they MP was forced into the vehicle. They drove towards Jaracaranda Coffee Research via Kambogo Road where the MP instructed them to stop near a waiting Honda CRV (Re. No. KBP 096W) belonging to Kiratu. Cyrus was left with the two men, who warned him not to disclose any information to the police,” Kanja said.

He said that police have recovered the two vehicles.

On Tuesday, Kanja had said that police were seeking to record a statement from the MP in relation to the incident after being blocked by his family from doing so at the Karen Hospital the previous day.

He also confirmed that they have been authorised by the Director of Public Prosecutions to arrest and charge the MP with land fraud.

Opposition leaders had earlier claimed Koimburi was abducted and tortured by the police saying it was a continuation of the targeting of government critics to suppress dissent.
