Detectives searching for pistol lost by NSSF chairman’s bodyguard after Embu accident

Sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are in search of a missing pistol which was stolen after a car carrying a bodyguard attached to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) chairman David Kariuki was involved in an accident in Embu County over the last weekend.

The accident happened along the Meru-Embu Road when the car was following President William Ruto’s motorcade before it crashed at Kapingazi Bridge after it hit another vehicle and motorcycle before it plunged into the river.

Kariuki, a former Embu deputy governor, was with his bodyguard and another person in the vehicle during the accident.

The motorcycle rider caught in the collision, sustained serious injuries and while his female passenger died on the spot.

Kariuki, his bodyguard and the third passenger sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The bodyguard later reported that his Beretta pistol, loaded with 15 bullets, went missing at the scene. After being rescued and realising the firearm was gone, he returned to the scene to search for it.

However, he was confronted by an angry crowd that had gathered and chased away before he could retrieve anything. Shortly after, the mob torched the car.

He was later taken to Embu Level Four Hospital for treatment and later discharged.

Police officers arrived at the location and managed to calm the situation, eventually clearing traffic on the busy route.

According to investigators, the search for the missing weapon is ongoing.

Authorities fear that the firearm could be used in criminal activity if it falls into the wrong hands.

This comes even as a police officer in Narok County reportedly lost his Jericho pistol magazine with 15 bullets during the Saba Saba demonstrations.

That incident is also under investigation as sleuths search for the lost magazine.
