IEBC intensifies drive to boost voter numbers
The push to boost voter participation ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election is gaining momentum, with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and political leaders intensifying efforts to encourage mass voter registration.
Youth, who make up a significant portion of the electorate, are being urged to take advantage of the ongoing 30-day voter registration exercise, as counties race to meet their targets.
In Migori County, IEBC Election Manager Ben Moseti praised the progress made so far in the nationwide enhanced voter registration drive but stressed the need for broader participation.
He also expressed concern over the increasing number of young people attempting to register using waiting cards, calling on the national government to fast-track the issuance of national identity cards to enable them to complete their registration.
Meanwhile, in Mombasa County, voter mobilization efforts have intensified, targeting more residents, particularly youth.
The IEBC has set a goal of registering at least 183,000 new voters in the coastal county ahead of the 2027 polls.
The nationwide registration push forms part of IEBC’s strategy to ensure a fully representative electorate for the next general election, with officials emphasising the importance of youth participation in shaping the country’s political future.
Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday, March 26, 2026 showered Kenyan youths with praise over the Tuko Kadi voter registration drive.
Speaking in Nyeri County, Gachagua stated that he was proud to be associated with the campaign and acknowledged that the youth were in the driver’s seat to bring change to the country.
He endorsed the movement as he led a group of youths to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officers in Mathira Constituency to register as voters.
