The government is on course to ship in 5 million 90-kg bags of maize earmarked to address the food security situation in the country especially availing flour in retail shops.
Following the move, the government assured Kenyans that the end to the shortage of the Sh 90 maize flour packets was nigh.
Between tomorrow and Saturday, the government will receive up to 71, 000 tons to make it a total of 150, 000 earmarked tons.
Much of this consignment will be ferried by rail from Mombasa to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) silos across the country. The grains are from Mexico which Agriculture Cabinet secretary, Willy Bett said, the government is giving priority to importation of white maize.
Currently the government is upgrading rail tracks at five NCPB silos to enable large consignments of maize to be delivered to these stores easily.
