EPRA lists 16 petrol stations that are selling adulterated fuel in the country
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has listed sixteen petrol stations that are selling adulterated fuel in the country.
The authority carried out its inspection during the period October-December this year, where a total of 5,574 tests were conducted at 1,151 petroleum sites.
“From the tests, 98.61 per cent of the sites were to be compliant while 16 sites were found to be non-compliant,” said the authority.
In September 2015, EPRA launched a retailer self-test kit for fuel products, for testing upon delivery before acceptance into storage tanks.
The commission said the kits would help eliminate illegal practices such as the diversion of petroleum products meant for export into the domestic market.
The kit uses technology known as the lateral flow device that is easy to use and greatly reduces the time and cost of monitoring and testing petroleum products.
In Nairobi, Riva Petroleum Service Station located along Murang’a Road has been listed for offering for sale super petrol, said to be
contaminated with domestic kerosene.
Three sites in Homabay have been listed by the authority, out of which two were found selling fuel meant for export while the other was selling diesel contaminated with domestic kerosene.
These include Wedewo Filling Station at Rodi Kopany, Otila Filling Station located at Homabay town and Nyang’inja Filling Station in Oyugis.
Triple M filling station and National Oil Kianjai, all in Meru were found to be selling adulterated fuel.
Safe Line filling station in Nakuru has also been listed for offering to sell diesel which was meant for export.
Others include Gumi filling station (Marsabit), Benedicto Awich filling station (Migori), Okay Maybe (Machakos), National Oil Kutus
(Kirinyag’a), Labos (Baringo), Total Membley (Kiambu), New City and Ngare Ngara both in Lamu, and Ajab filling station in Kilifi.
In the period between July and September 2020, EPRA shut down eight petroleum filling stations after they were found with adulterated fuel.
During that period, a total of 5,646 tests were conducted across 1,314 petroleum sites.
From the tests 99.39 per cent of the sites were found to be compliant but eight sites were found to be non-compliant.
The eight are; Obolla Filling station in Kisumu which was offering the sale of super petrol contaminated with domestic kerosene.
Cafra filling station in Kakamega, Highway Filling station in Kakamega, Shanzu service station in Mombasa.
Others are; Bulema road illegal site in Nairobi, Ongoro filling station in Kisii, Jotham Songori filing station in Bungoma and Wakam filing station in Nakuru.
