Dentist stabbed husband in their bedroom, the court told

DCI officer says investigations revealed that the couple picked a quarrel during the celebration then retreated to their bedroom where the wife stabbed him

A dentist who was charged with killing her husband 17 years ago  allegedly stabbed him in their bedroom during a birthday party celebration of their children, the court heard.
An officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Ali Ibrahim told Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Benmark Ekhubi that Dr Nisha Sapra allegedly stabbed her husband Yogesh Madan Sapra after a quarrel.
He said investigations revealed that the couple picked a quarrel during the celebration then retreated to their bedroom where the wife stabbed him.
Ibrahim said that after the scuffle the deceased was rushed to Nairobi Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries few days later.
While being cross examined by Senior Counsel Kioko Kilukumi, the officer said that he gathered information from domestic workers that the relationship between the couple was stormy and sour.
He revealed that Yogesh had earlier injured his wife in a fight and the wife never reported the incident to the police or any other authority.
Ibrahim said that the information gathered from investigations on what transpired on the fateful day shows that it was only the couple who were in the bedroom.
The investigator said he never interviewed the deceased at the Nairobi Hospital where he had been admitted for treatment.
“I did not interview the deceased to establish how the injury occurred as I took over the Investigations after he had passed on and cremated,” he told the court.
However, he said he investigated the domestic workers in the residence of the accused who told him their relationship was stormy and violent.
Their two children also recorded their statements to the police regarding the incident.
He also told the court that he never interviewed Dr Peter Mungai under whose care the deceased was.
The witness said that he was not aware of the evidence tendered by Dr Mungai in 2008 during an inquest into the death where he claimed that Yogesh had confided in him that he was stabbed by thugs.
The officer affirmed that the deceased was stabbed in his bedroom as workers told him that he was removed from the bedroom and taken to Nairobi Hospital nursing the stab wound.
In further examination by state prosecutor Christine Marete, Ibrahim said there was no report in any police station to the effect that Yogesh was stabbed by thugs.
“There is no direct evidence that there were thugs in their home on the material day when Yogesh was stabbed,” he said.
The officer differed with allegations that there were thugs in their home adding that there was a party which was attended by several guests.
Nisha has denied killing her husband and is out on bond.
After the inquest to establish the cause of death of her husband, former magistrate Timothy Okelo ruled that Nisha should be charged with murder.
She was charged before Justice Muga Apondi (now retired) with the murder of her husband.
The charge was later reduced to manslaughter which she is being tried for.
The hearing will resume on April 14.
