Council for Legal Education unveil two-days capacity building conference

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has officially launched a two-day inaugural conference at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, aimed at enhancing the capacity of law faculties and bar-training institutions to deliver integrity-focused legal education.

Under the theme “Legal Education and Training for a Globally Competitive Lawyer,” the conference has brought together legal practitioners, academia, representatives of law enforcement agencies, and other regional stakeholders.

The gathering serves as a platform for dialogue on modernizing legal education and training frameworks across East Africa.

During the opening remarks, Prof. Collins Odote, Chairperson of the Council of Legal Education, has emphasized that CLE’s primary mandate is to produce lawyers who are recognized not only in Kenya but also on the global stage.

He has noted that the council is actively preparing for a modernized education system, acknowledging that Kenya’s educational landscape has transformed significantly.

As such, there is a pressing need to adapt the teaching of law to meet these new realities.

Odote also mentioned that the council is in the process of reviewing the Advocates training programme regulations and developing a new curriculum that incorporates innovative methods of legal education to better equip future lawyers.

In his contribution as a panelist, Prof. PLO Lumumba has highlighted the importance of regulating legal education without politicization.

He stressed that little progress can be made if law is taught in Kenyan institutions without proper regulation and oversight.

This sentiment was echoed by David Too, Director of Legal Services at the Anti-Corruption Commission, who emphasized the need for structured regulation to uphold the integrity and quality of legal training.
