Capital DT Sacco CEO Muri charged over alleged Sh39million fraud
The case places the spotlight on the management of funds within one of the country’s deposit-taking savings and credit cooperative societies, with the allegations now subject to judicial scrutiny.
Embattled Capital DT Sacco Society Limited Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Stephen Murithi is facing a criminal case over the alleged theft of Sh39 million from the cooperative, in a case that has put the Sacco’s top management under scrutiny.
Murithi was arrested by the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) Fraud Investigation Unit and subsequently arraigned before a Meru yesterday court, where he faced three counts relating to the alleged loss of the funds.
According to the charge sheet, the alleged theft occurred over a two-month period between February 23 and April 25, 2026, at the Sacco’s head office in Meru County.
Prosecutors told the court that Murithi, who was the sacco’s chief executive officer at the time, unlawfully took Sh39 million belonging to Capital DT Sacco after the money came into his possession by virtue of his employment.
“On diverse dates between 23rd February, 2026 and 25th April, 2026 at Capital DT Sacco Society Ltd Head Office within Meru County, being the Chief Executive Officer of Capital DT Sacco Society, stole KSh39,000,000, property of Capital DT Sacco Society, which came into your possession by virtue of your employment,” the charge sheet reads in part.

Murithi denied the charges before the Meru court.
He was released on a Sh1million bond or an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000, with two sureties.
The court has scheduled the matter for mention on August 19, 2026, while the hearing is set to commence on October 15, 2026.
