Forty-seven people are hospitalized at Fort Tenan Sub-County Hospital after a bus they were traveling was involved in an accident along the Kericho-Londiani road.
The injured passengers were rushed to the hospital by the Kenya Red Cross team who were immediately deployed at the scene on time.
The bus was carrying sixty-two passengers and seven of them escaped unhurt.
By the time of this publication, the traffic officers had cleared the scene and normal traffic was flowing.
“Forty-seven injured individuals have been swiftly taken to Fort Tenan Sub County Hospital by the County Government and seven people escaped unharmed. The scene has been cleared by the Kenya Police.” Kenya Red Cross stated.
The cause of the accident is yet to be revealed even as the police are still investigating but photos shared by Kenya Red Cross showed the bus in a ditch.
This is the second accident on the same road within Fortnight.
Last week, a sixty-six-seater bus veered off the road and hit a ditch.
This week, the Inspector General of police Japhet Koome warned motorists against reckless driving urging them to observe traffic rules.
“We have entered into the festive season and from experience, we expect high vehicular traffic on our roads due to increased movements of Kenyans across the country. The vehicular situation this year is further compounded by the ongoing heavy El-Nino rains being experienced in many parts of the Country, which in turn is causing poor visibility on the roads.” Koome said.
Yesterday, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen urged passengers to make noise and protest if a driver or even a Tuktuk Cyclist overloads.
His remarks came after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officers stopped a Tuktuk that was carrying eight passengers instead of the recommended four.
The driver of the Tuktuk fled from the scene.
“Protest when you see a driver start to overload. It is dangerous to overload.” The CS said.
“This Tuktuk was stopped by NTSA and traffic police officers while carrying eight passengers instead of the recommended four on the Kisumu-Nairobi Road. Needless to say, it was dangerously overloaded. I hope the cyclist, who fled the scene, will be made to face justice for his reckless behavior.” He added.
