General Charles Kahariri Muriu has been sworn in as the new Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).
President William Ruto presided over the swearing-in ceremony of the CDF and the top command of Kenya Defence Forces at State House, Nairobi.
Kahariri, who takes over from the late Francis Ogolla, pledged to uphold, protect and defend the Constitution; the people and Republic of Kenya while discharging his duties.
“I will diligently serve the people and the republic without fear, favour, bias, affection, ill-will, prejudice, or any political, religious or other influence.” General Muriu said.
Others being sworn-in alongside General Kahariri are Major General John Mugaravai Omenda who was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him Vice Chief of the Defence Forces who previously served as the Kenya Air Force Commander.
Also Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed was appointed the Kenya Air Force Commander while Major General Paul Owuor Otieno was posted to Kenya Navy and appointed Commander.
Major General Thomas Njoroge Ng’ang’a, Major General Nyamu Githinji, Major General Jattani Kampare Gula, Major General George Okumu as well as Brigadier Samuel Kosgei Kipkorir
The CDF position fell vacant following the demise of the former Chief of Defense Forces the late General Francis Ogolla in a helicopter crash at Elgeyo Marakwet on 18th of April 2024 alongside nine others.
Pledging his support and goodwill, President Ruto called on the KDF’s top brass to discharge their mandate diligently, describing it as a solemn responsibility.
“You have taken charge of the leadership of the KDF. The appointment that has been bestowed on you is to serve the republic and the people of Kenya. You must remember that exercising authority comes with responsibility and accountability.” President Ruto said.
The CDF position is occupied on a rotational basis by generals within the three military formations which include the Kenya Army, the Kenya Airforce and the Kenya Navy.
