The Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome has confirmed that he has withdrawn security detail of section of leaders involved in the Azimio One Kenya coalition anti-government protests.
Koome said that he will not condone leaders who stir up havoc and hide behind armed officers while attacking the police.
“If you are a leader, IG will ensure your safety. But how come you’re throwing stones at me while armed officers stand behind you? I will undoubtedly take my officers,” Koome said.
“As the Inspector General, I have allowed no protests. You are looking for a server on every street of Nairobi? I don’t understand, where is this server?” he asked.
He also sent a stern warning to politicians who intimidate junior police officers saying that they should face him instead of targeting his juniors.
“Can I call them cowards? Face the IG. I will deal with you as a law abiding citizen of this country. I have a job to do and I will discharge that mandate without fear or favor,” he insisted.
Some of the leaders whose security has been withdrawn include National Assembly minority leader Opiyo Wandayi, and Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino.
The IG also warned citizens who intend to use offensive weapons to cause havoc in the country’s capital tomorrow during the planned protests.
He stressed that the government will not entertain any form of violence meant to interrupt normal functioning of businesses in the city.
“We have heard others say that they will bring violence in Nairobi tomorrow. Nothing of the sort will happen because the police are ready to ensure there’s peace in the country. Anyone armed with offensive weapons will be arrested,” Koome noted.
He went further and urged every Kenyan to carry on with their normal businesses tomorrow without fear affirming that security teams are well prepared for the protest.
