The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has asked judges to decisively deal with cases of incitement and hate mongering, so as to tame politicians with loose tongue and ensure the country is peaceful during and after the elections.
Speaking while addressing the ongoing judges colloquium in Mombasa, Assistant DPP Alexander Muteti said failure to process, hear and determine cases related to incitement and hate speech had led to many politicians becoming repeat offenders.
“Let our judicial officers assist us in convicting politicians who are spreading hate speech during their campaign period, failure to which we will be doing merry go round with the same politician being charged, with similar offences,” said Muteti.
Muteti urged the judiciary, to embark on a day to day hearing of cases related to election disputes and incitement.
He said the office of the DPP is ready to prosecute election related offences arising from the August 8 general elections. Muteti while making a presentation, said the office of the DPP had established a Rapid Response Election and Related Offences Team to deal with any election related offences arising from the elections.
