A gang of criminals allegedly broke into Kipasi police station in Mbita sub-county, Homa Bay yesterday and made away with four guns and 110 bullets from the armoury.
Police said that the gang went away with 80 rounds of 7.62millimetre and 30 rounds of 7.62millimetre special ammunition as well as three G3 and one AK-47 rifles recorded under serial numbers G3 S/NO. A3 6699056, G3 S/NO. 6593403, G3 FMP 402994 and AK-47 NO. 4913650.
Homa Bay County Police Commander Samson Kinne confirmed the incident and received more police officers from Mbita and Homa Bay police stations at the patrol base to back up administrators to aid in locating the guns, pursue the culprits and investigate further into the matter.
“We are still pursuing the issue to know how and why it happened as part of efforts to get the thieves… chiefs have been mobilised to trace the stolen guns,” observed Kinne.
Investigations led by County Directorate of Criminal investigations (DCI) Commander Abed Kavoo and Mbita Deputy County Commissioner Abraham Kemboi revealed that the criminals entered the building through force entry and broke a padlock on the armoury door to access the guns kept in a steel rifle box.
Sources reveal that at the time of the breaking in, no officer was manning the station.
The police corporal on duty discovered the breaking in today morning, a day after reporting to duty and immediately alerted his bosses.
Police have beefed up security to investigate the circumstances under which the incident happened amid rising fears that the weapons could be used in criminal acts.
