President-elect William Ruto has promised to announce new fertiliser prices next week as soon after he is sworn in.
Speaking during a church service in Maua, Meru county, Ruto said that the initial cost of fertilisers which retailed at Sh6,500 will change.
“We have a lot of people who help us in farming. An example is tea farmers, who buy their fertilisers at almost Sh6,000. I have had a meeting with the ministry of farming and I will announce the new reduced price for fertilizers this week,” he said.
He said that his incoming government will start the journey of changing the agriculture sector.
According to him, since fertilizer prices will be reduced, a reduction on the price of maize flour should be expected.
“We have to embark on a journey that will see to it that the cost of living is changed. I had a sit down with the ministry in charge of economy and it is of the knowledge that the country is full of debt and our economy is not at a good place. Despite our economy not being at a good place, together we are able to improve it. I want to ask Kenyans to unite and help in building our economy in order to eradicate poverty and build our nation,” he added.
The cost of fertiliser had risen to levels that affected both large and small-scale farmers in the past year resulting to food prices going higher.
The prices of maize flour went high in August after the government ended its subsidy scheme with millers that started in July.
