The dates of orientation for the newly elected Members of Parliament has been set for August 25 and 26.
According to the National Assembly Acting Clerk Serah Kioko, the two-day orientation will be held between 9 am and 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm and 5 pm respectively.
Registration of the members, collection of bio data, issuance of parliamentary identification cards, and instruction on how to use the chamber voting system, tours of Parliament buildings, and briefings by the Office of the Clerk on crucial legislative matters with in-depth briefings on the services and facilities available for the lawmakers are all expected to be included in the orientation sessions.
“Each member-elect shall be required to submit the original certificate of the elected member of the National Assembly issued by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Returning Officer to the Clerk of the National Assembly,” states the notice.
The MPs must submit the necessary paperwork, which includes an original ID or passport, a KRA pin certificate, an original election certificate from the IEBC, and a copy of an updated curriculum vitae.
The clerk will then create a copy of the certificate, certify the copy, and give the member-elect the original certificate back.
MPs must participate in the orientation sessions led by the National Assembly following the first sitting.
“The new members would also be briefed on the chamber voting system and tour the Parliament Buildings.
The new MPs will also be facilitated to register for various services and facilities available including medical insurance and other related services, facilities and benefits.
Also, re-elected members are also expected at the session as they would
be required to register for medical insurance among other benefits accorded to MPs,” read the notice.
The National Assembly Clerk shall administer the Oath or Affirmation of Office to any members-elect present during the first sitting of the House in line with Article 74 of the Constitution and Standing Order 3 of the National Assembly Standing Orders, according to Kioko’s
statement.
“This will be followed by the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly at the same sitting. More information on the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be available after the notification of the date of the first sitting of the House by H.E. the President,” the statement affirmed.
Constituents in the August 9 elections, declared at least 146 members of the National Assembly representing single constituencies and 34 of the 47 female representatives in the 12th parliament superfluous, some of whom sought county offices.
