Political firebrand and Azimio One Kenya coalition Secretary General Junet Mohamed has denied any links to a viral audio recording where a man mimicking his voice is heard planning an alleged meeting with would be senior officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Through a post on his twitter handle, Junet distanced himself from the audio terming it a fabrication by malicious political opponents.
He also invited investigative agencies to expeditiously investigate the matter.
“A manipulate voice recording doing rounds on social media purporting to capture Hon. Junet Mohamed as speaking to an IEBC official is fake,” read the statement on his twitter. Hon. Junet urges the public to ignore the video, which appears to be one of the last desperate acts of a dying political campaign that has been based on years of lies, innuendoes, mudslinging, arrogance, chest-thumping, name calling, insults and now on a sympathy-seeking spree.” The post read in part.
In the leaked audio which has since gone viral, a man is heard planning a ‘high level meeting’ with officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
However, Junet termed the audio as fake and that it is an act of malice from certain individuals who are against him.
“Hon. Junet invites investigative agencies to move with speed and investigate the matter, unearth the perpetrators and bring them to the law.”
In the audio tape making rounds online, a man was heard speaking to a purported official from the electoral body in vernacular requesting that IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati and the commission’s Chief Executive Officer Hussein Marjan should be present in the meeting.
Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa sensationally claimed that his Suna East counterpart, Junet had organised a high-profile meeting with IEBC officials in a bid to manipulate the August 9, polls.
To seemingly back up his claim, the MP shared an audio clip he dubbed “Part 1” claiming it was of Junet talking to an organizer of the meeting.
In the audio clip, a man Barasa says is Junet, is heard telling a yet-to-be-identified person on the other end of the phone call that he is ready for the meeting they had talked about.
Barasa said he will hold a press conference tomorrow to give a detailed statement and evidence on the allegations.
“Hon. Junet Mohamed, we are following you keenly. I will address the nation tomorrow at 4 pm with details and evidence of your attempts to manipulate elections. This will include meetings with pollsters to manipulate opinion polls in favour of Raila Odinga,” the MP wrote on his Facebook page.
