Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has said the commission is guided by the constitution and cannot be directed by any individual or authority on what to do.
“We are not directed by any individual or authority. We are answerable only to the constitution,” Chebukati said.
Chebukati further said the commission is ready to conduct the fast-approaching August polls while at the same time asking politicians to stop spreading propaganda ahead of the polls.
“IEBC has prepared for this election more than ever before. We will ensure that we have a transparent process. We are going to give Kenyans a free, fair, and credible election. That is our commitment to the country,” he stated.
Chebukati also took the opportunity to announce that the first batch of ballot papers will be received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) today, July 7.
“The ballot papers are being printed in Greece. The last ballot papers to be received will be those of the presidential election,” he said.
The IEBC chair also vindicated that the tender for ballot printing was done transparently and dismissed allegations that there were plans to print extra ballot papers, especially for the presidential election.
