Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) has named Sylvia Mulinge as the next Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Uganda, effective September 1.
She currently oversees the consumer business at Safaricom.
Mulinge’s selection to run Vodacom Tanzania in 2018 was thwarted when Tanzanian officials refused to grant her a work permit, marking her successful transition to the CEO position.
Her vast experience will be used by MTN Uganda, which has been implementing services akin to those invented by Safaricom, to expand the company.
“Sylvia Mulinge becomes MTN Uganda CEO, joining from Safaricom, where she served as Chief Consumer Business Officer for the Group. A seasoned executive, she brings with her a passion for transforming customers’ lives using technology,” South Africa’s MTN Group said.
With effect from August 1, 2022, until September 30, 2022, Andrew Bugembe, the current chief financial officer, will serve as the temporary CEO.
Mulinge joined Safaricom in 2007 and has held a number of key positions over the years, including Director of Consumer Business, Head of Retail, and Head of Sales.
She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nairobi in Kenya (first-class honors).
She continues to serve as the Chief Consumer Business Officer at Safaricom.
