Azimio La Umoja presidential flagbearer’s running mate Martha Karua says her selection as the coalition’s presidential running mate is a watershed moment in Kenyan politics.
She said her nomination to deputise Odinga should be praised by any progressive Kenyan, regardless of party loyalty, during a speech today at the Church of the Torch in Thogoto, Kiambu County, as part of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) Woman’s Guild centennial celebrations.
“I am also very happy as you celebrate 100 years, because just two weeks ago, I was nominated a running mate to one of the major candidates, Raila Odinga.
So it is like an icing on our celebrations because irrespective of your persuasion, it is recognition and inclusion,” said Karua.
Karua also asked the Church to take the lead in exposing politicians who cross the line in the run-up to, during and after the August elections, claiming that this is the only way to preserve the country.
“The PCEA church has been a pioneer in the fight for women’s rights, whether through education or ending FGM, and it has been carried on to date. So this is a celebration for the women and for the church,” she said.
“We are facing a period like no other in our country; the difference between right and wrong is blurred and that is very dangerous at election time.
Those of us professing the Christian faith, I ask us to restore the distinction between right and wrong. That way we save ourselves and our country,” Karua said.
