Azimio One Kenya Coalition has indicated that it is forming an advisory council to help settle the debate over a presidential running mate ahead of the August elections.
Chaired by the coalition party’s chairperson President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Suna East MP Junet Mohamed said the Council further directed the National Executive Council to come up with a campaign strategy that will ensure the coalition party scoops a majority in Parliament and the county assemblies.
“The council also resolves to appoint an advisory panel to recommend to the presidential candidate suitable candidates for nomination as deputy presidential candidate,” Mohamed said.
“We have directed the National Coalition Executive Committee to immediately prepare a campaign strategy that will ensure that the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya presidential candidate wins the 2022 presidential election and that the coalition forms the next government,” he added.
The Coalition Election Board, Coalition Elections Appeal Board, National Disciplinary Committee, and Dispute Resolution Panel will all be formed and appointed by the council.
The Head of State was accompanied by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, Narc-Kenya’s Martha Karua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Kanu’s Gideon Moi, and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, among others.
Tensions have been rising inside the movement about who will be Odinga’s deputy with Kalonzo and Chama Cha Maendeleo Party leader and Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua expressing interest in the position while Karua has been fronted by a section of members within the coalition.
