President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to chair a regional meeting in the Democratic Republic of Congo today in Nairobi.
Through a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Kenyatta will host the meeting dubbed the 2nd Heads of State and Government Conclave on the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The government has invited Heads of State and Government from other East Africa Community (EAC) countries including Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda in an event which will be attended by DRC’s president Felix Tshisekedi.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya wishes to inform you that the 2nd Heads of State and Government Conclave on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will convene in Nairobi on April 21, 2022 hosted by His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya,” read part of the statement.
The event comes after the recent summit that saw DRC sign up to formally join the regional bloc as the seventh member of the regional bloc during the virtual 19th Extraordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State chaired by President Kenyatta on March 29.
Welcoming DR Congo into the EAC, Kenyatta said the coming of the new member into the Community will open doors of opportunity for expanded trade and co-operation.
“With the accession of the DRC, our community’s population now stands at about 300 million and our combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will now stand at $250 billion,” Kenyatta said.
