A police seargent will today be charged with murder at High Court in Mombasa over the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old student in Mombasa County.
Tony Katana was shot dead at Uwanja Mbuzi, Kongowea in Mombasa County
on August 12, 2016 by Sergeant John Otieno, who was attached to Nyali police station.
According to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, they launched an investigation after Katana’s body was discovered and identified by relatives at the Coast General Hospital mortuary the following day.
“The investigation established that the student died of bullet injuries inflicted during an encounter with police at Uwanja wa Mbuzi and the death falls within IPOA mandate; to hold police accountable for their actions,” read part of IPOA’s statement.
After investigations, IPOA forwarded the file to the Office of Director of Public
Prosecution with recommendations to charge Seargent Otieno with murder, contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code.
Further, the ODPP, after independently reviewing the evidence, concurred with the reccomendations of the authority to charge him.
Sergeant is scheduled to take a plea for the capital offence.
By the time of his death, Katana was aged 16-years-old and was a Form Two student at Havards Secondary School.
