Plans are at an advanced stage between Kakamega County Government and the National Government to construct a cancer centre in Kakamega.
Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya revealed yesterday during the launch of Kakamega County Empower Project cancer clinic at the County General Hospital.
“The cancer centre will not only serve Kakamega residents but also other regional counties as well as the neighbouring countries such as Uganda,” he said.
Oparanya regretted that cancer patients in Kakamega have had to travel long distances for cancer screening services and treatment, a factor he attributed to lack of a comprehensive, specialized cancer facility.
“This project that is set to commence before the end of this year will be a game changer in the health care industry in the country as we journey towards making Kakamega a medical county,” he asserted.
Kakamega County has fully equipped and operationalized a Chemotherapy unit at the County General Hospital reducing distances covered by patients for the sessions in other facilities outside Kakamega County.
The Governor also used the platform to remind residents to avoid unnecessary movements during the upcoming Easter season so as to prevent further spread of Covid-19 virus in the County.
Kakamega First Lady H.E Priscillah Oparanya who hosted several other County First Ladies during the Empower cancer clinic launch led by the National Vice Chairperson of the County First Ladies Association (CFLA) H.E Alamitu Jattani, called on residents to visit the facility for screening services to aid in early detection of the deadly disease.
“Partners to continue supporting efforts of the County First Ladies especially on creation of cancer awareness and implored on members of the public to desist from stigmatizing cancer patients,” she urged.
