MKU wins top spot for progress towards achieving SDGs as it sets date for graduation ceremony
The university is the United Nation Academic Impact hub chair for SDG for Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
Mount Kenya University is marking another milestone even as it plans to hold its 27th graduation ceremony on August 8.
The university has been ranked for the first time in the prestigious 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, placing it among only 10 universities in Kenya that met the rigorous ranking criteria.
The announcement, made on June 18, revealed that 2,526 universities from 130 countries and territories were evaluated for their progress towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Impact Rankings recognise institutions that are making meaningful contributions to sustainable development, environmental responsibility, and social impact on a global scale.
MKU was recognised for its exceptional performance in four key SDGs:
- Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3)
- Quality Education (SDG 4)
- Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10)
- Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17)
The university, which has a student population of over 50,000, graduated over 7,000 students graduated during the last graduation ceremony held on August 4 last year while in 2023, it graduated 7,974 students showing its rapid expansion since it was granted a Letter of Interim Authority by the then Commission for Higher Education in 2008 before securing a Charter in January 2011.
A notice in the local dailies by the university’s the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Research, indicates institution will hold its graduation ceremony on August 8 when it is expected to churn out another huge number of graduates, who will step into the world as future job creators and professionals.
“The Chancellor of Mount Kenya University, Prof John Struthers on behalf of the University Council, management Board and Senate wishes to inform all our esteemed graduands who have qualified for conferment of degree and various University Awards that the 27th Graduation Ceremony shall be held on Friday, August 8, 2025,” he announced.
The DVC called on the prospective graduands to note the date, time, and venue.
The ceremony will be led by the University Chancellor Prof. John J Struthers beginning 9 am at the graduation pavilion, Happy Valley ground along Garissa Road.
The list of prospective graduands who have cleared with the university will be posted on the University website.
MKU urged any potential graduands whose names is not on the list should immediately notify the respective school through emails posted on the University website.
Online clearance for graduation should be done through the University Management Information System on the Link https://studentportal.mku.ac.ke
“Graduands should have cleared academically and financially with the University by Friday, July 4, 2025, for their names to be included in the graduation booklet and certificate list,” the DVC Academic and Research Affairs noted.
He requested that the graduands verify their names by Friday, July 4, 2025, with any requests for changes in spellings and orders of names should be made within this period at the respective campus admissions office.
“Any request for a change of name must be supported by the relevant academic document(s),” the university said.
“Graduands are expected to be in full graduation attire for both the rehearsal and graduation ceremonies. The graduation gowns will be hired from Monday, 28th July, 2025, to Wednesday, 6th August, 2025, and will be collected from the respective Deans of Schools at the main Campus, Thika, and from the Examination Offices in respective campuses during office hours,” it added.
The event will be covered live on TV47 and MKU’s social handles and website.
MKU, which was founded by renowned educationist Simon Gicharu, has over the years reinforced its reputation as a leading institution for empowering global change-makers.
Apart from its main campus in Thika, the university operates the Nairobi campus, which operates from MKU Towers, and MKU Union Towers along Moi Avenue). The facility is a non-residential campus and the bulk of her students are either working-class professionals seeking to bolster their professional skills by attending evening classes, or fresh KCSE graduates just starting off their tertiary education. Besides the regular and evening academic programmes, the Campus also hosts the School of Law (at Parklands), and the Institute of Justice and Security Studies.
