Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa and Suleiman Dori of Msambweni have been expelled from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following a decision by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC).
ODM’s National Executive Council on Thursday resolved to adopt a report by the party disciplinary committee which recommended the expulsion of the two lawmakers over alleged gross misconduct.
Edwin Sifuna, who is a member of ODM’s NEC and also the party Secretary General, said after a day-long meeting, the party had resolved to forward the recommendation for Jumwa and Dori’s expulsion to the National Governing Council for immediate action.
Mr. Sifuna pointed out that the two lawmakers are free to challenge the decision in court.
He further said that the NEC had directed Minority Whip Junet Mohamed to write to National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi for the removal of the two MPs from any committee they sit by virtue of being ODM members.
On December 4, 2018 the ODM disciplinary committee recommended the expulsion of MPs Jumwa and Dori, as well as seven Members of County Assembly — six from Homa Bay and Immaculate Adhiambo of Busia County — who were accused of disobeying party decisions.
