Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko’s fate hangs in the balance after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations launched investigations over alleged impropriety at the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
DPP Noordin Haji yesterday confirmed he is aware DCI George Kinoti is undertaking the probe in his office.
Effectively, this puts Haji’s predecessor in a precarious situation who was at the helm of the key state organ at the time.
“The DPP further wishes to inform the public that the DCI is currently conducting investigations at the ODPP in relation to financial impropriety.” The DPP’s office said without elaborating further.
The government is on an overdrive to expunge graft in state institutions and the investigations are being carried out by the multi-agency team.
Immediately after assuming office last month, Haji outlined his agenda after meeting the ODPP advisory board
He also convened a meeting with all departmental heads under the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for stock taking mission.
The heads of department were tasked to present status reports, requirements and the agenda of their respective portifolios.
The current probe is widely interpreted as a move by Haji to streamline operations in his office and also seek to capacity build the institution which he succeeded from his predecessor.
To effect the changes, the Haji requires concurrence from the advisory board which is mandated to advise the DPP on recruitment and appointment of staff, promotions and disciplinary processes of the staff members.
Besides the DPP who chairs the board, other members include; Attorney General , Secretary Public Prosecutions, Principal Secretary, Ministry of State for Public Service, Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Principal Secretary, National Treasury, chairperson, Law Society of Kenya, director from Witness Protection Agency, chairperson, Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and the Inspector General of the National Police Service.
