Approximately 50 per cent of people in Busia County who are suffering from cancer end up losing their lives because they fear going for treatment in government hospitals.
The County Health boss Dr Maurice Siminyu said most of the patients fear to know their cancer status due to stigma until when it is too late.
“Only five percent of the cancer patients in Busia County used to lose their lives, but it has now shot up to 50 percent, ” said Dr Siminyu.
Speaking to the press in his office, Dr Siminyu said the county is using more than 2,000 community health workers to monitor patients who suffer from the disease.
He said according to a research which was carried in the area, breast, uterus and prostate cancers are common in the county.
