Wetangula: Kenya Kwanza is the majority in National Assembly

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has maintained that the Kenya Kwanza Alliance is the majority despite last Friday’s ruling that declared the opposition majority.

In issuing his ruling today, Wetang’ula said the court did not give direction on which side is the majority or minority hence the status quo remains adding that the Kenya Kwanza coalition comprises 164 members and Azimio One Kenya Alliance has 154 members.

“Arising from the foregoing, the Kenya Kwanza is the majority and the Azimio is the minority. The Leadership of the House remains unchanged,” Wetang’ula said in his communication from the chair.

He further directed that if dissatisfied, an appeal should be lodged against the decision.

Azimio Members of Parliament led by Minority whip  Millie Odhiambo disagreed with Wetang’ula’s decision, adding that they would take further decisions against his ruling however much they respect his communication.

“We respectfully disagree with your communication. As Azimio, we shall take further action,” the Suba North Member of Parliament said.

The Azimio MPs walked out of the house during the proceedings disgruntled.

The Speaker’s ruling comes amid debate on which party occupies the majority and minority following the recent High Court ruling that stripped Kenya Kwanza of its majority status.

Three-judge bench including John Chigiti, Lawrence Mugambi, and Jairus Ngaah noted that Speaker Wetang’ula contradicted the Registrar of Political Parties whose documents showed that Azimio had the majority status in 2022 before 14 MPs jumped ship to the ruling party.

Yesterday, the Azimio legislators had occupied the majority side during the resumption of Parliamentary sittings and called upon Wetang’ula to honor the court ruling.

“The court decided that the Azimio side is the majority coalition. As a parliament, we need to obey court rulings even if we do not agree with them,” Odhiambo stated.
