Turkana Assembly speaker Christopher Nakuleu resigns, cites frustrations by governor

Nakuleu tendered his resignation to the Assembly clerk ahead of debate on a scheduled impeachment motion, which had already been shared in a notice.
“I am writing to formally resign from my position as the Speaker of the County Assembly of Turkana, effective today (February 25, 2025),” the letter by the speaker read in part.
The speaker said his resignation comes after his personal considerations and professional objectives.
“It has been an honour to serve in this role and to contribute to the important work of the Assembly. I have gained invaluable experiences and forged meaningful connections during my tenure. This decision comes after careful consideration of my personal and professional objectives,” he said in the letter.
This is however contrary to what Nakuleu said during his brief to the press after submitting his resignation, as the speaker cited political frustration as he stated that the oversight role of the Turkana Assembly has been interfered with.
Nakuleu accused Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai of compromising the Assembly and not allowing it to have its space and fulfill its oversight mandate.
“The Oversight role of the Turkana County Assembly has been compromised and that is why there are altercations between the Assembly and the executive. The governor has not accepted to be oversighted by the assembly,” Nakuleu stated.
“Governor Lomorukai wants to usurp the oversight role even as he executive his executive role which is unconstitutional. I have stood firm that he needs to accept being oversighted as he is appropriating money on behalf of the people of Turkana,” he added.
He insisted that his resignation is meant to allow the Assembly to find an alternative leader who will ensure the Turkana Governor delivers for the residents who elected him.
“I feel that I should give space to the County Assembly so that it can find an alternative person who will fully check the governor and ensure that he delivers for the people of Turkana. There are things I could not criticize the governor on,” he said.
Before the resignation, the Speaker had been summoned by the Assembly on Monday ahead of his scheduled impeachment.
The motion spearheaded by Kalokol Ward MCA Michael Epem Ebenyo accused Nakuleu of constitutional violations, gross misconduct, and incompetence.
He alleged that Nakuleu used his office for personal interests and irregular staffing of the county assembly.
Over 30 MCAs had appended their signature to ensure his impeachment.
Before being the Turkana Assembly Speaker, Nakuleu served as the Member of Parliament for Turkana North until he lost to Ekwom Nabuin in the 2022 elections.
