Ndaka-ini farmers in Gatanga constituency have a reason to smile after an environmental organization ,The Nature Conservancy donated farmers with special polythene papers to enable them construct water pans to mitigate effects of drought in their area.
George Njugi an official of the Nature conservancy say the non -governmental organization have been working in 37 countries worldwide and in Africa they operate in 7 countries.
In Kenya Njugi says the group has a program known as upper Tana water fund whereby they sensitize farmers on how they can harvest run-off and utilize it later in farming. Njugi says they are donating farmers with U-Filtrated line{nylon bags } that is used to construct water pans to collect rain water and has a capacity of 54 cubic metres.
Njugi confirms by the year 2018 they the organization will have done 18,000 water pans. Mukuna Kariuki, the founder of Ndaka-ini Dam environmental conservation association{Ndeka} says the water storage facilities will ensure food security in the area and for the first phase atleast 30 farmers will benefit.
A gatanga farmer, Kamau Gitito embrace the donation saying they will now be able to fight hunger and enhance their agribusiness.
Kamau say they are faced with water shortage challenge since they were banned from farming using water from surrounding water reservoir like ndaka-ini dam.
