Suspected Ebola case in Kakamega turn out negative
The Ministry of Health has shed light on the suspected Ebola virus case reported in Kakamega county to have no trace of the virus after samples were tested at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) laboratory in Nairobi.
The patient was a 32-year-old man from Kayoro village in Nambale Busia County who had travelled to eastern parts of Uganda to visit a relative and has since been in isolation at the St Mary’s hospital Mumias, after showing Ebola like symptoms.
“We would like to inform the public that the laboratory tests for samples taken from the patient have since turned out to be negative and therefore there is no cause for alarm,” MoH stated.
The ministry urged Kenyans to remain vigilant and observe hygiene measures to avoid contacting the virus as the country is still at risk.
“We would like to appeal to members of the public to continue being vigilant and also stay safe by strictly observing hygiene measures that would protect them against this deadly disease,” MoH added.
Since the declaration of the Ebola Virus outbreak, health authorities in the Kenyan Uganda border frontier have since heightened surveillance in a bid to prevent the virus from spreading.
Kenyans have been urged to minimize and avoid unnecessary movements in and out of the country through entry points along the western border.
Everyone passing through the border from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, South Sudan into Kenya also have to undergo screening.
Uganda has since recorded 35 more cases and seven deaths.
