Sun and Sand Hotel in Kilifi on spot over negligence claims after a minor drowned in their pool

The management of Sun and Sand Hotel in Kilifi county has been blamed for negligence after a six-year-old baby drowned in their pool over the Easter holiday.

The family of the late Dylan Waruiru is yet to come to terms with how their baby drowned at the hotel pool despite assurances by the hotel staff that their baby would be safe.

The holiday of the family, which had gone to enjoy at the hotel located in Kikambala, Kilifi County, turned tragic after one of the hotel staff requested that they allow the minor to go swimming at the kid’s pool.

The family alleged that their baby drowned minutes after the hotel staff made the request.

The mother of the deceased boy told the local press that she had initially refused to allow the little one to swim with the rest of the kids, but allowed after an assurance that he would be safe by the hotel staff.

“The lady who came to pick my kid said that she had already finished entertaining the kids and asked them to come back. Why didn’t she bring him back as she had picked him before?” Peninah Muthoni, the mother of the deceased boy, questioned in tears.
The family complained that the Sun and Sand hotel has not marked the pool, and you cannot differentiate the Kids’ swimming side and the adults’ deep end.

They have blamed the hotel for negligence.

“They have not even marked the pool. There is nothing to show the difference between the adult and baby pools. It is total confusion and no one cares, as not even the staff are passing by to see if the kids are safe,” Caroline Wairimu, the aunt of the boy, lamented.

“This cannot be brushed off… It is total negligence by the hotel management,” Peter Maina, the grandfather of the deceased, stated.
Confirming the ongoing investigations, Kilifi South Sub-County Commander Ktabul Kochalle said they are still interviewing the hotel staff to get the happenings of the fateful day.

“The four who had been arrested were freed on police bond. We are still investigating the matter, and those found culpable will be charged in a law court,” he stated.

The hotel management is yet to make a statement on the issue despite having indicated earlier that they would address the matter yesterday.
