Senior Counsel Judy Thongori is dead

The legal fraternity has been thrown into mourning following the death of Senior Counsel Judy Thongori.
Announcing her death, Law Society of Kenya President Faith Thongori described her as a distinguished member and beacon of excellence, who has “been a monument of legal prowess and exemplified all the qualities of a professional North Star.”
“This morning, the legal fraternity mourns the loss of a distinguished member and beacon of excellence. Judy Thongori SC has been a monument of legal prowess and exemplified all the qualities of a professional North Star. Her noteworthy contributions to family law and human rights are timeless and continue to propagate a learning curve for many in the profession. The legacy she leaves behind will remain an indelible mark of her impact that lives on among us,” she posted on social media.
“We condole with all her friends, family, colleagues, and the Senior Counsel Bar for this immense loss. We pray for divine comfort and healing as we contend with this unfortuitous news. May she rest in peace,” she added.

Thongori was the proprietor of Judy Thongori & Co. Advocates which was founded in 2003 with a strong focus on family law. She had a career spanning more than 30 years and is acknowledged as an experienced litigator, advisor and mediator in family law matters.During her practice, she extensively litigated on behalf of many family members in family disputes at all levels in the court and has contributed to public awareness and discourse on various aspects of Family Law through audio, television and print media.

She was a trained Family Mediator accredited to the Mediation Accreditation Committee of the Judiciary of Kenya and also contributed to international litigation on children and family issues through opinions for Courts and lawyers in the United Kingdom, France, Netherlands and other countries, according to her profile on the firm’s website.

In 2013, she contributed extensively to the development of the Matrimonial Property Act which became law as well as the development of the Marriage Act which became law in 2014. Additionally, Thongori has contributed to Human Rights and Gender issues and has trained Lawmakers, Lawyers, Police and even Judicial Officers on the same
