Ruto pushes for peace and security in restive region

Ruto also affirmed his unwavering support for former prime minister Raila Odinga’s African Union Chairmanship

President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to peace and security in the region, citing the recent role the country has undertaken in the peace processes in democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Sudan and Somalia.

Speaking during the Annual Address to Heads of Mission and International Organizations at State House, Nairobi, Ruto set Kenya’s 2025 diplomatic agenda and emphasized on regional stability, economic diplomacy and climate action.

Ruto also affirmed his unwavering support for former prime minister Raila Odinga’s African Union Chairmanship, noting that Raila’s extensive experience in governance and continental affairs made him the real ideal candidate to drive Africa’s transformation agenda. He emphasized that Raila’s leadership would inject fresh momentum into the AU’S mission of economic integration, peace and security.

President Ruto also added that Kenya’s commitment to diplomacy has allowed us to forge strong global relationships. Since independence, we have expanded our diplomatic footprints from six missions to 70. We continue to prioritize regional integration, intra-African ties, economic diplomacy, and global peace and security.

On matters climate change, the president cited the success of the Africa Climate Summit held in Nairobi. The country has made remarkable progress in transitioning to a green economy with over 93% of the grid being electrically generated from the renewable sources such as geothermal, wind and solar.

He has also called on international partners to honor their climate financing commitments. He said, “Kenya will continue leading by example, advocating equitable climate financing and ensuring that Africa’s voice remains central in global climate discussions. I urge your support in this endeavor.”

Ruto also said Kenya remains steadfast in its commitment to multilateralism, recognizing international cooperation as essential to addressing global challenges. He pledged to foster international cooperation, peace and development and also invited global partners to join Kenya in advancing these goals.
