Chris Brown lashes out at critics: ‘I’ll be the villain’

American R&B star Chris Brown has reignited controversy after launching an angry social media tirade against critics, politicians and sections of the entertainment industry, declaring that he is no longer interested in winning over his detractors.

Brown took aim at what he described as hypocrisy in the music and entertainment industries, while asserting his dominance as an artiste.

“Not a single artist on this planet can f— wit me on my worst day,” Brown wrote. “I’m tired of being nice. F— yo opinion. I’ll be the villain.”

His outburst followed a decision by Texas State Representative Venton Jones to withdraw plans to honour Brown during the singer’s sold-out performance at AT&T Stadium.

Jones apologised to constituents, citing Brown’s history of domestic violence.

Brown responded angrily, accusing politicians of approaching him and then backing away when public criticism emerged.

“Y’all came to me! not the other way around,” he wrote, telling critics to leave him alone and allow him to focus on fans who had paid to attend his shows.

Brown’s latest remarks come against the backdrop of a career repeatedly overshadowed by controversy.

In 2009, he pleaded guilty to felony assault after attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna, an incident that resulted in probation, community service and counselling.

He has subsequently faced other allegations and legal controversies, including accusations of assault and violence, although not all allegations have resulted in convictions.

Despite the controversies, Brown has maintained a substantial global following and a prolific recording career.

He has accumulated more than 100 appearances on the Billboard Hot 100, while continuing to headline major tours and concerts.

His latest comments underline the continuing tension between Brown’s commercial success, his loyal fanbase and persistent criticism over his past conduct.
